It’s September in Chicago! That means it’s time for our monthly guide that highlights the best of where to go and what to do for STEM (and STEAM) fun.
September STEM in Chicago: What to do this month
Now that the summer tourists are gone, Free Museum Days are back! Check our events calendar to see what’s coming up, or see a summary of Chicago’s free museum days. And in keeping with tradition, Chicago Public School students who attend the first day of school get a free family pass to the MSI.
If the weather stays mild, don’t miss your chance to paddle around the metro area. Mid-September marks the beginning of the fall bird migration, so you never know what surprises nature might have in store for you.
If you or your child is an inventive type, you’ll want to visit the American Science and Surplus Annual Warehouse Sale. It will leave you inspired (and maybe scratching your head). You’re sure to find something you didn’t know you needed.
Harvest Festivals abound! Look for one at Garfield Park or North Park Village Nature Center. And our friends at Toddlin’ Around Chicago have a great guide to area apple orchards if you want to pick food from the source.
The fourth Saturday of September is Public Lands Day, celebrate with free admission to a national park.
Stay in the know! Join our newsletter and we’ll deliver an awesome roundup of news and events to you twice a month.
We can’t have a harvest without clean water! See what’s happening around town for World Water Monitoring Day.
And, although there’s plenty to keep you busy locally, architecture buffs might want to head to Milwaukee for Doors Open, which is their version of Open House Chicago (coming in October!).
Astronomy Day and Hispanic Heritage Month also fall in September as does Smithsonian Magazine’s National Museum Day, which provides a day of free access to museums across the country, including several in and around Chicago.
You can also enjoy a free day at a National Park and other public lands in celebration of National Public Lands Day
Be sure to check our full event calendar to see what’s coming up later this fall. (Hint: Open House Chicago!) Join our newsletter and we’ll deliver an awesome roundup of news and events to you twice a month.
