What to do in Chicago: June STEM Fun
Summer is almost here and there’s so much to do around the city! Here’s a roundup of our favorite STEM events and Chicago summer traditions to put on your calendar.
There’s still time to register for awesome STEM Summer Camps.
If you’re making your own fun instead of sending the kids to camp, don’t miss Chicago’s free summer museum days. During June 2019, Illinois residents can enjoy free days at the Adler Planetarium, the Shedd Aquarium, Museum of Science and Industry, and the Field Museum. Be advised, though, that Chicago’s museums can get quite crowded on free days!
Plan a paddle on one of Chicago’s urban or suburban rivers.
Printer’s Row Lit Fest has plenty for kids who like to read and learn new things. MidSommarFest in Andersonville isn’t quite science-y but it’s a celebration in honor of the summer solstice and it’s a Chicago tradition.
Full Moon Jam Again, more of a unique Chicago celebration of the full moon (and fire spinning) than a scientific event, but it’s something to see. If you want to see the stars, take a trip to the Adler Planetarium or see our events calendar to see if the Scopes in the City street team is heading your way. Oh, and here’s a sweet way to teach your kids the moon cycle.
The Millennium Park Family Fun Festival kicks off in late June and runs through early August. They offer free kid-friendly activities from 10 -2 under the tent at the Chase Promenade.
National Week of Making See what’s happening in the Chicago Makes community! Don’t miss our interview with Sashi Neri, a Chicagoan fostering a new generation of makers at the Chicago Public Library. And, best of all, check out these amazing library makerspaces around Chicagoland!
Make your plans now for Eyes to the Skies Hot Air Balloon Fest held in Lisle in early July.
STEM at Home
Global Wind Day Chicago is known as the Windy City. Some say that’s because of the “hot air” our local politicians are always blowing around. Others attribute the nickname to the wind tunnels created by our many skyscrapers (which you can visit in October during Open House Chicago). For now, check the local breezes here. Spin this globe and click to zoom to observe prevailing winds around the world. The site is surprisingly calming.
National Pollinator Week We’ve got ideas and activities to help you celebrate.
World Oceans Day Granted, we tend to think more about our Lake Michigan than the oceans given our location, but nonetheless, we admire and support the Shedd Aquarium’s campaign to get Chicago restaurants to #SheddtheStraw.
STEM Kids Chicago provides information on the movers and makers of the Chicago STEM/STEAM community, product reviews, and fun activities that you can do or make at home. Join our newsletter and we’ll deliver an awesome roundup of news and events to you twice a month.
